Julius Kamau Kimani, the man who attempted to disrupt Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u’s photo session outside the Treasury building on Budget Reading Day, has pleaded not guilty to charges of creating a disturbance likely to cause a breach of peace. He appeared before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi on Wednesday to answer the charges.
During the hearing, Kimani denied the accusations leveled against him and was subsequently granted bail set at Ksh.10,000. The case is scheduled for mention on July 3rd of this year.
Last week, during his initial appearance in court, Senior Principal Magistrate Ochoi had ordered that Kimani undergo a mental assessment at Mathari Mental Hospital to ascertain his mental state. However, during Wednesday’s proceedings, the court was informed that the mental health facility was unable to conduct the assessment as planned.
The development suggests potential complications in determining Kimani’s mental fitness to stand trial, raising questions about the next steps in the legal proceedings. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how the court will address the issue of the mental assessment and its implications for Kimani’s defense.
