The governor of Mombasa, Abdulswamad Nassir, has banned heavy trucks from using the city’s main roads at certain times.
Speaking on Friday, Nassir said the move would help ease traffic congestion in the county.
“One of the things that will help us reduce traffic is that we have gazetted the timings for heavy trucks,” he said.
“We are going to reduce truck movements on this particular road. That is Nyali Bridge, Fidel Odinga, Links Road, New Malindi and Old Malindi Road and the ferry area,” he said.
Nassir said trucks will not be allowed to move in the areas between 6am and 9am and between 3.30pm and 8pm.
He said the move would help reduce the number of vehicles on the roads at peak times of the day.
Nassir added that the heavy trucks that will be banned are those that exceed 10 tonnes in weight.
The county boss expressed his intention to ensure that Mombasa residents benefit from projects in the county, including the Mombasa Port.
“I hope to leave a legacy that includes the people of Mombasa benefiting from the port,” he said.
In addition, Nassir announced that they have tendered for the construction of the County Aggregated Industrial Park.
This, he said, will create more opportunities for the people and further stimulate growth.
Nassir confirmed that a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Chamber of Commerce and the county government is already in place to strengthen partnerships.
