Ruth Nyambura, the mother of 19-year-old Ian Njoroge, has spoken out about the incident that led to her son’s arrest on charges of assault and robbery with violence against a Kasarani-based police officer.
Nyambura revealed that her son assaulted Corporal Jacob Ogendo after the officer allegedly demanded a bribe of Sh 10,000. According to Njoroge, he offered to try raising Ksh.5,000 through his friends, but the officer rejected this, leading to the physical altercation, which was captured on camera.
“I was surprised because I have brought my son up in a Christian way,” Nyambura stated. “He has attended good schools, is well-mannered, God-fearing, obedient, and very polite at home. I have never seen him agitated. Something must have happened to that boy.”
Nyambura recounted her conversation with her son, who explained that he wanted to return the car home before it was time to go to church. On his way, he encountered the policeman, made a U-turn, and was then stopped. The officer demanded Ksh.10,000, but Njoroge, being a student, could only offer Ksh.5,000, which the policeman refused.
Nyambura was unaware of the incident until she returned home that evening to find police cars at her gate. Upon entering the house, she discovered police officers physically manhandling her son.
