A prominent Kenyan photographer has found himself in legal trouble after a newlywed couple accused him of failing to deliver crucial footage from their lavish five-day wedding.
The couple, known for their affluence, had contracted the photographer in December 2023 to create a documentary-style film covering their entire wedding week, including personal stories and interviews with their parents and close relatives.
The photographer quoted KSh650,000 for the project, and the couple promptly paid a deposit of KSh400,000 on December 12, 2023. They also provided a driver and a Toyota Prado for the photographer to travel to upcountry locations in Nyanza and Western Kenya to film their families. The photographer’s team was accommodated in a Kisumu hotel for three days to capture the wedding story, and on the event day, some team members were airlifted to the venue in Narok County.
“We treated them so well because we wanted this well covered. My husband even asked our wedding accountant to complete their balance before our wedding day. They even showed us random clips of what they had been filming,” the bride said.
Despite these efforts, by mid-January, the photographer had not delivered the promised project. In early February, the photographer claimed that a memory card containing crucial footage had malfunctioned and data could not be transferred. The couple, patient and understanding, gave the photographer additional time to rectify the issue. However, by April, the photographer still failed to produce key footage, including an exclusive dinner event where the couple narrated their love story in Diani. They were only provided with photos.
Feeling frustrated and deceived, the couple decided to take legal action. In court , they demand a full refund of the service cost, along with all expenses incurred during the filming and damages for the inconvenience, totaling KSh1.5 million. “We took the photographer to court because he has taken us in circles for over three months and made us wait for something that they knew was not there,” the groom explained.
