Police in Voi, Taita Taveta County, have intercepted 318 kilograms of bhang with an estimated street value of Sh9.8 million.
A suspect was arrested during the operation in the Ikanga area on Wednesday.
Acting on a tip-off from the public, police discovered the drugs in a vehicle with fake number plates. Taita Taveta County police boss William Sadiq stated that the Mombasa-bound vehicle was transporting 11 sacks, each weighing 90 kilograms, of the illegal substance.
This arrest comes just seven days after two suspected drug peddlers were apprehended in Busia. Three bales of bhang were seized by DCI detectives in that operation. DCI boss Mohamed Amin revealed in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that the narcotics were hidden in backpacks and were believed to be destined for Nairobi.
Amin explained that the arrest was carried out by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) based in Busia. The suspects, aged 26 and 29, were arrested following a tip-off from the public. Informants reported seeing the duo at the busy Busia bus station preparing to board a Nairobi-bound bus with suspicious luggage.
“Anti-narcotics officers responded swiftly and managed to arrest the two, and upon a thorough search, discovered the 12kg of cannabis sativa with an approximate street value of Sh360,000. Legal processes have been initiated against the duo,” Amin said.
The police continue to urge the public to provide information that could help in the fight against drug trafficking, emphasizing the critical role of community cooperation in these operations.
