Tonight’s match between Manchester United and Crystal City will see referee Jarred Gillett making history by wearing a head camera, a first in the Premier League, PL officials have announced.
This head-mounted device will be integrated into the standard referee’s communication system.
The Premier League clarified that the footage from the camera, known as a RefCam, will not be broadcast live. Instead, it will be part of an upcoming program set to air later this year, aiming to provide “further insight and education into the demands of officiating” in English football’s top-flight matches.
The use of the camera for this one-off occasion has received approval from the sport’s governing body, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), as well as from the Premier League, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), and the clubs involved.
