Jillian Munyau, the mother of Rex Kanyike Masai, the 29-year-old protester shot in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Thursday evening, has revealed more details about the tragic death of her son.
Speaking to the media on Friday morning at the City Mortuary, where Rex’s body was taken, Ms. Munyau disclosed that Rex was fatally shot in his left thigh.
According to Ms. Munyau, Rex was rushed to Bliss Medical Centre, located at Archives in the CBD, for emergency care, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. “His friend called me when the incident happened, and when I left home and reached CBD around 8 PM, he had already passed on,” she said.
Ms. Munyau explained that the fatal shot was fired around the Archives area, where Rex and his friends had sought cover after a teargas canister was lobbed at them.
She highlighted that Rex lost a significant amount of blood before being taken to the medical facility. Disturbingly, she mentioned that Rex’s friends reported that police officers refused to assist in transporting him to a hospital for urgent medical care.
