Residents of Karie and Kabuguri in Embu County on Tuesday morning made a distress call to Kiritiri police station, reporting that a group of individuals were committing a robbery in the area.
Quick to respond, the police officers chased after the suspects as they fled the scene in a Toyota Probox.
Despite being ordered to surrender, the occupants of the vehicle refused and a high-speed chase ensued.
In an effort to stop the suspects, the police officers were forced to shoot the tires of the Probox.
Two of the suspects managed to escape on foot, but the driver was apprehended and is currently being held for questioning.
Mbeere South Subcounty police commander, Inviolata Lumati, stated that the arrested suspect is helping with the ongoing investigation and that the police believe the group, which includes at least two more individuals, has been terrorizing local businesses in the area for the past month.
In light of the recent increase in criminal activity, Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi has called on the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Kithure Kindiki, to expedite the deployment of administrative police officers to the region in order to strengthen security.
Additionally, residents of Karie, Kathera, and Kabuguri have voiced their concerns about the high levels of insecurity in the area and have requested that the government empower local nyumba kumi members to effectively report and respond to incidents.
