Barely a week after James Wanjohi deactivated his flashy Instagram account, where he showcased his lavish lifestyle, detectives have launched a search for him for allegedly scamming job seekers of over KSh600 million.
It’s reported that through his company, WorthStart Africa, more than 4,000 job seekers parted with large sums of money, some paying up to KSh140,000, with promises of being sent to Canada, the UK, the US, and Australia for job opportunities.
However, the jobs have been confirmed to be non-existent, and the victims of the well-orchestrated scam are now demanding refunds.
Last week, Wanjohi’s company was raided and ransacked by investigators following multiple complaints from the public about the agency swindling desperate Kenyans. Most staff and other directors linked to the agency have already been arrested and are in police custody, while Mr. Wanjohi, the main suspect, has gone into hiding.
Many of the victims learned about Wanjohi’s company through his preachings at his church, Jesus Culture Ministries, where he marketed WorthStart Africa. He also sponsored promotions on vernacular radio and TV stations. Those who have recorded statements say Wanjohi went to extreme lengths, even doctoring their financial documents, to secure their VISAs. Some victims have confirmed that they have since been banned from traveling to certain countries following the fraudulent scheme.
