Samburu National Reserve has welcomed another set of twin elephants.
The two new bundles of joy are believed to have been born this month according to a statement from Save the Elephant- an organization mandated to monitor elephants in Samburu National Reserve
The birth of twins comes as a pleasant surprise since less than one per cent of elephant births are twins – and in cases where they are born, they rarely survive.
The twins- both female- were born to parent Alto from a family of elephants known as Cloud.
The mother elephant and the twin calves were spotted at the reserve a few days ago.
“Hooray! Yet another set of twins (both female) have been born in Samburu National Reserve almost two years after Bora from the Winds gave birth to twins for the first time in decades. Meet Alto’s double joy who were first spotted by our researchers this week,” Save the Elephant noted.
Approximately 23 months ago, another elephant Bora gave birth to a set of twins- male and female but the latter died last year.
“Bora’s twins were born during one of the worst droughts, but despite her excellent mothering skills, the female twin sadly died.”
