A senior police officer was shot and killed on Thursday after he shot and wounded a magistrate at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi.
The incident occurred soon after Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti delivered a ruling in a case involving the officer’s wife. The officer, who was the Officer Commanding Station in Kisumu, had traveled to Nairobi to attend the hearing. His wife was a suspect in the case and sought release pending the hearing and determination of the case.
The court session was held in a tent outside the main court precincts. Following the magistrate’s ruling, the officer went behind the tent and shot her, according to Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei.
“Other officers who were present responded and shot the officer, fatally wounding him,” Bungei stated.
In addition to the magistrate, another member of the public was injured during the incident. Both the magistrate and the other victim were rushed to the hospital in serious condition following the 2 pm shooting.
