Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has responded just hours after it was revealed that he is being sued for child support.
In a series of Tweets, Sonko mocked the suit and asked the woman to bring the child to him, alluding to the biblical story of Jesus famously saying, “Let the children come to me.”
“Just like Jesus said “let children come to me…” Am kindly asking the lady alleging that she has my 15 years old kid to bring the kid to me,” Sonko Tweeted.
The 2022 Mombasa Gubernatorial seat candidate then claimed that the woman in question had lost custody of her two other children, who are now living with their father.
Sonko accused the plaintiff of blackmail in one of the tweets, claiming she uses her children to blackmail their fathers for party money.
“Huyu dame hutumiya watoi kublackmail ndio apewe doo ya kudunda 24/7. I’ll give the kid the best of what life has to offer,” Sonko added.
“My family keeps on growing bigger day in day out, I feel happy and blessed adopting orphans, street families and neglected kids in my home,”
At the same time, Sonko who has promised to give the child ‘the best life has to offer’ said it was unlikely that he would meet the Sh448k-a-month child support
“Hiyo part ya kutoanishwa pesa alafu anaenda kudunda 24/7 ndio hatutaelewana ata kidogo na sitoi hata bob,”
“Hata mtoto awe si wangu amlete tu kwangu ata saii nitamlea vizuri. Na pia madem wengine mkifeel hamuezi cope up na kulea watoi msiwadhulumu kivyovote, waleteni kwangu nitawalea,”
According to court papers seen by Citizen.Digital, the woman in question says that she met Sonko circa 1999 and went on to have a romantic, on and off relationship with the ex-governor.
Their daughter together, currently in Form 2, as per the affidavit, was born in 2007 and is currrently at home over an oustanding school fee balance.
“Mr Sonko and I are the biological parents of the minor herein,” the court papers, from the case filed at the Senior Principal Magistrate at Ngong read.
“Mr Sonko has always been defiant and brazen to accept responsibility and assist me with the maintenance of the minor. He has over the years willfully withdrawn support towards the maintenance of the minor thus denying her what is rightfully hers and forcing me to take full responsibility for the minor,”
The woman is seeking to have Sonko be ordered to pay school fees for the minor totaling Ksh.86,000, as well as Sh30,450 to cover school-related expenses and upkeep for the minor, pending the outcome of the suit.
This is in addition to the monthly maintenance of Sh448,450 which she says will cover expenses such as food and shopping, rent, security, clothing and housekeeping, entertainment, medical coverage, education, transportation, and utilities.
