The radio department of the Standard Media Group has announced that it will go off air starting July 3 if the company does not clear outstanding salaries.
This decision was made during a meeting on June 28 by staff from Radio Maisha, Spice FM, Berur FM, and Vybez Radio.
In a letter to the management, the radio team highlighted that they had not been paid their salaries for June to August 2023 and February to June 2024. The letter stressed the urgency of addressing the matter of unpaid salaries and mounting arrears. The staff complained about receiving inconsistent payments despite multiple promises from the employer.
The radio team demanded full payment of their June 2024 salaries by July 2 and called for consistent future payments. They also proposed that 30% of the arrears be paid each month until the full amount is cleared.
A meeting with the management is tentatively scheduled for July 4. The radio department warned that if their demands are not met, all programming on the four radio stations will go off air on July 3 until their concerns are addressed and a written commitment is issued by the company.
Francis Atwoli, the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K) boss, had earlier mentioned that he had spoken with the company management about clearing the salary arrears, expressing concern over the company’s financial stability.
