Detectives have apprehended a suspected gold scammer who was discovered with counterfeit gold nuggets and 23,600 fake USD notes in 100 denominations at his hideout in Utawala.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), through its X platform, announced the arrest following a complaint by a Georgian national who fell victim to fake gold racketeers.
The victim lost over USD 6 million in a fraudulent gold deal involving approximately 161,000kg of gold.
The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday night, during which the counterfeit US currency was found concealed in two travel bags and a steel box. Additionally, the investigators seized fake gold nuggets stored in eight green canvas bags, with each bag weighing approximately 10kg.
According to DCI, the Georgian merchant engaged in the purported gold transaction with a Ghanaian partner, facilitated by a letter of administration from the High Court of Justice in Ghana. The victim incurred expenses totaling USD 6,090,500, covering the movement of the consignment from Ghana to Kenya, as well as documentation and storage services.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the individuals involved in this scam are no strangers to the court system, with their names and activities already documented in court records.
