A secondary school teacher in Nyamira, employed under the Board of Management (BOM), was found dead in what is suspected to be a case of death by suicide.
The deceased, identified as Kevin Omwenga, taught Chemistry and Mathematics at Nyamira Boys Secondary School. According to reports from the area assistant Chief Johnson Manyara, Omwenga was known to be an enthusiast of the Aviator betting game and was allegedly deeply in debt, having borrowed money, including from colleagues, amounting to approximately Ksh50,000. Some believe he may have lost a significant portion of this money while playing Aviator.
Nyamira Boys School principal, George Onkundi, stated that Omwenga was last seen near the school on Wednesday but did not report to work. Despite being employed by the school’s BOM for the past four years, Omwenga had not yet been employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Principal Onkundi noted that Omwenga did not exhibit any signs of stress leading up to the incident.
Concerns were raised when calls made to Omwenga’s phone went unanswered on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Subsequently, some teachers went to his house to check on him. Upon arrival, they discovered his lifeless body hanging by the neck after peering through a window. The police and the area assistant chief were then notified and responded to the scene.
Tragically, Omwenga’s wife and their one-year-old child were away visiting his sick mother in the village at the time of the incident. The body was transported to Nyamira Referral Hospital as investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death continue.
