Chaos erupted at a church event in Kisii on Sunday, causing a disruption in the planned fundraiser for several hours.
Tensions escalated to the point where a tear gas canister was lobbed at the pulpit, leading to panic among the worshipers who fled the swampy Etono grounds in Bomachoge Borabu.
The chaotic situation forced the presiding cleric to perform dramatic chants in an attempt to dispel the “dark cloud” hanging over the event. The fundraiser had brought together five PAG churches from the Etono area and was attended by six Members of Parliament from various political backgrounds.
The event, presided over by South Mugirango MP and Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro, saw the presence of ODM MPs Obadiah Barongo and Anthony Kibagendi from Kitutu Chache South. Other MPs in attendance included Japhet Nyakundi (Kitutu Chache North), Alfa Miruka (Bomachoge Chache), and Patrick Osero (Borabu), alongside several pro-UDA ward representatives.
Tensions flared when MP Anthony Kibagendi took to the podium, prompting pockets of youths among the congregants to jeer at him. The situation escalated further when the microphone Kibagendi was using was snatched away, and he was chased off the podium by the youths, seeking refuge among the other MPs seated on the dias.
As the chaos threatened to escalate, a police officer deployed tear gas, dispersing the attendees and bringing the event to an abrupt halt.
