The three terror convicts who escaped last Sunday from Kamiti Maximum Prison have been arrested in Mwingi, Kitui county.
The three, Musharraf Abdalla, Joseph Juma and Mohammed Abdi were nabbed as they headed to Garissa.
Police said they suspect Musharraf Abdalla Akhulunga a.k.a Zarkarawi, Mohammed Ali Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo a.k.a Yusuf were headed for Somalia.
An image of them in handcuffs was immediately circulated.
They escaped on November 15 from Block A 6 where they had been held.
DCI boss George Kinoti confirmed the arrest and added they were being brought to Nairobi.
DCI placed a Sh60 million bounty on their recapture.
It is not clear if someone will get the bounty for the arrest of the three.
The escape led to the arrest of 13 wardens and major changes in the Kenya Prisons.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi and his ICT countertops Joe Mucheru were set to visit the prisons on Thursday.
On Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta sacked Wycliffe Ogalo as the Commissioner-General of the Kenya Prisons Service.
And in a dramatic turn of events, Ogalo and two other top officers at Kamiti prisons were arrested from Magereza building and taken DCI for grilling.
He alongside the commandant of Kamiti prisons Charles Mutembei and his deputy were being grilled at DCI headquarters over the escape.
He was however released minutes later.
This follows a breach in security at the Kamiti Maximum Prison which led to the escape of three terror convicts.
Uhuru appointed and witnessed the swearing-in of Ogalo’s successor, Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Warioba.
The Head of State made the decision on the back of a briefing from the ministry responsible for correctional services regarding the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison escape.
