The Weeknd is set to perform on the highly esteemed Super Bowl stage.
Abel Makkonen Tesfaye known to many as The Weeknd has been announced as the 2021 Super Bowl half-time show performer. The 30-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter has had a slew of great hits including ‘Blinding Lights’ and ‘StarBoy’ which he is set to perform live.
Taking to Instagram, he recently shared that his selection as the Pepsi-sponsored Super Bowl half-time show was largely influenced by rapper and Roc Nation CEO Jay Z.
In a statement Jay-Z noted, ” The Weeknd has ushered in a sound all of his own. He’s soulful uniqueness has has defined a new generation of greatness in music and artistry… This is an extraordinary moment in time and the Pepsi Half Time Show is going to be an extraordinary experience with an extraordinary performer.”
3-Time Grammy Award winner, The Weeknd is a highly appreciated artist with mass appeal. with more than 45 platinum and singles and albums, his 2019 release Blinding Lights became the longest-running top five single on the US Hot 100.
The Super Bowl half-time show is one of the most prestigious gigs in music, with previous headliners including Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce.
According to BBC, next year’s event will take place at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida on Sunday, 7 February.
