A new report from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has offered insight into the most dangerous roads in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
The NTSA tracked road safety data between January and August 31, 2022 to compile the report.
Nairobi accounted for 357 out of the 3,202 fatalities reported countrywide in the period under review.
A majority of accidents in the city took place on the busiest roads, key arteries connecting different parts of the Nairobi metropolitan area.
Pedestrians represented the bulk of casualties, with 199. Motorcyclists were second at 81. They were followed by 28 passengers, 26 drivers, 17 pillion passengers and six pedal cyclists.
The 50-kilometre Thika superhighway recorded the most accidents with 44.
It was followed closely by Outer Ring road, a 13-kilometre stretch that runs primarily along Nairobi’s Eastlands area. Outer Ring road recorded 43 crashes.
The 3.9-kilometre Waiyaki Way which runs through much of Westlands recorded 23 accidents. Mombasa Road, a major highway, posted 17 accidents, as did the Northern Bypass.
The Eastern Bypass, Ngong’ Road and Jogoo Road recorded 8 accidents each according to the NTSA report.
Outer Ring road has consistently ranked at the top of the list of Nairobi’s most dangerous roads in recent years. In 2021, it accounted for 44 of 371 casualties from road accidents in Nairobi. Second was Waiyaki Way, which claimed 38 lives, and Mombasa Road with 29 deaths.
In August 2019, Outering Road came in second behind Mombasa Road. It ranked first a year earlier in June 2018.
