The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Sunday arrested a woman suspected of child traffic and rescued two minors.
The woman identified as Mary Akinyi Mulamula was arrested by officers from the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit after a manhunt in Kabete area, Nairobi after officers received a report of a missing child.
The arrest followed a report that a child had been stolen from her home in Kakamega County on June 6, 2024.
“On that day, the suspect deceived the Shamba boy by claiming that she was taking the child to Kakamega to enrol him in a sponsorship programme that promised a monthly stipend of Sh9,000. The suspect disappeared with the child without a trace, leaving the family in despair,” the DCI said in a statement on Sunday.
After extensive investigations, the officers’ perseverance paid off, leading to the successful rescue of the victims and the arrest of the suspect.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains resolute in its commitment to protect the rights of children and eradicate the scourge of human trafficking,” the agency, headed by Amin Mohammed, added.
The DCI says she had two victims at the time of her arrest, who have since been rescued.
She remains in police custody pending further police action.
