An 18-year-old woman from Uganda made shocking revelations before the Eldoret law Courts as she narrated how she murdered her son.
The accused, Barbara Mutenyo, told the court she committed the act to escape the hassle of raising the six-month-old baby.
Mutenyo is said to have killed her child in October last year at her home in Kabogo area, Kapseret sub-County in Uasin Gishu County.
“It is true I killed my son, who was by then aged six months, wrapped his body in a gunny bag and then dumped it in a well as I was unable to take care of the child on my own,” she narrated.
In her defense, Mutenyo claimed she suffered severe depression hence could not carry out her parenting duties as required.
After committing the act, she is said to have escaped for three days. Her neighbours alerted the police who then launched a manhunt for her.
Three days later, Mutenyo surrendered at Kapseret Police Station and confessed to the murder of her young son Junior Nesero Butsetse.
She remained under police custody until hearing of her case on Wednesday, March 27. Her lawyer Robert Makori pleaded with Justice Reuben Nyakundi to non-custodial sentence if found guilty of murder.
He argued that this will allow the accused receive treatment for her depression and trauma she underwent after killing her own child.
The prosecution however, led by Mark Mugun, is pushing for maximum sentencing on the young mother for taking away her son’s life.
The case will proceed on April 18, 2024.
