Angry locals in West Kanyamkago, Uriri Sub-county, Migori County, took matters into their own hands on Thursday evening, resulting in the death of a middle-aged woman and the torching of several houses in a retaliatory attack sparked by a land dispute.
The deceased was identified as the wife of Omollo Obila, one of three brothers who were involved in a fight over land earlier that morning.
The altercation led to the death of one of the brothers, identified as Obano Obila, aged 34.
According to West Kanyamkago location chief Mr. John Ojwang, the woman was killed by enraged locals who accused her husband of being involved in Obano Obila’s death. Mr. Ojwang stated that the angry mob overpowered police officers who were at the scene investigating the initial murder that occurred in the morning.
The area chief highlighted that the family of the late Obila has been embroiled in a long-standing land dispute, with efforts to resolve the matter proving futile.
Mr. Ojwang appealed for peace and calmness in the region as the police conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents.
