Safaricom has refuted claims of integrating the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) network on its platform during the M-Pesa outage on Tuesday.
The telco’s Chief Finance Service Officer Esther Waititu emphasized that Safaricom lacks the authority to share customer data with other business entities.
“Let me be clear that there was no integration, KRA themselves if you follow them, also publicly spoke that there was no integration happening between Mpesa and KRA,” she said.
KRA on January 9, 2023, also downplayed the claims on their official X account, dismissing them as “fake news.”

The interruption on Tuesday affected M-Pesa services for an extended period, impacting transactions made through the M-Pesa app, USSD code, and SIM card tool.
The disruption caused inconvenience for both businesses and customers.
Safaricom had initially attributed the service disruption to scheduled maintenance and expressed gratitude to customers by providing cash gifts as a gesture of appreciation following the interruption.
Waititu reassured Kenyans that the company does not foresee any further disruptions to their services in the near future.
“The issue has been resolved, services continue to run and we can assure Kenyans, and our customers specifically that everything is fine and we do not anticipate any issues going forward,” she said.
